Tahr hunting in New Zealand gives mountain hunters an opportunity to pursue one of the world’s most recognizable alpine trophies in the Southern Alps.

Mature Himalayan Bull Tahr are known for their heavy horns, thick bodies and long winter manes. They live in steep, remote country where weather can change quickly and access is often part of the challenge.

At Ivory Cliffs Estate, we offer guided New Zealand Tahr hunting on both the East and West Coasts of the South Island. These hunts can be booked individually or combined with Red Stag and Chamois to create a complete New Zealand hunting experience which we would recommend.

Here is what hunters should know before planning a Tahr hunt in New Zealand.

What Is a Himalayan Tahr?

The Himalayan Tahr is a large, goat-like animal native to the central Himalayan ranges of India and Nepal. Tahr were introduced near Aoraki/Mount Cook in 1904 and have since established populations throughout parts of New Zealand’s Southern Alps.

A mature Bull Tahr carries heavy, curved horns, but much of the animal’s trophy appeal comes from its mane. As winter approaches, mature bulls develop a long, thick coat that covers the neck and shoulders. The dark mane against the snow, rock and alpine country is what makes a mature New Zealand Bull Tahr such an impressive trophy.

New Zealand Tahr inhabit steep mountain faces, rocky basins and high alpine terrain. Their strength, balance and ability to move through difficult country have earned them a place near the top of many mountain hunters’ lists.

Where Does Tahr Hunting Take Place in New Zealand?

Wild Himalayan Tahr are found in the Southern Alps of New Zealand’s South Island.

Ivory Cliffs Estate offers access to two distinct Tahr hunting areas:

  • The Rakaia Valley on the East Coast
  • The Fox Glacier region on the West Coast

Both areas offer genuine alpine Tahr hunting, but the travel, accommodations and overall experience are different from others over here. Come see for yourself.

How Does Helicopter-Assisted Tahr Hunting Work?

One of the most common questions we receive is whether hunters shoot Tahr from the helicopter. The answer is no.

The helicopter is used to access remote country, locate mature animals and place the hunter and guide in a position to begin the final approach. Once a shooter Bull Tahr is located, the hunter and guide exit the aircraft and complete the hunt from the ground.

Using a helicopter allows us to reach mountain country that could otherwise require days of backpacking. It also gives us flexibility when working around rapidly changing alpine weather.

The helicopter is a tool for access. You still have to move through the terrain, work into position and make the shot from the mountain.

When Is the Best Time to Hunt Tahr in New Zealand?

Tahr can be hunted at different times of the year, but we recommend hunting from late April through July.

As New Zealand moves into winter, mature bulls develop the thick, dark manes for which they are known. The Tahr rut generally takes place from May through mid-July. During this period, bulls are in excellent condition and may move to lower or more accessible elevations while seeking nannies.

Earlier hunts can offer milder temperatures, while later hunts provide the best opportunity for a fully developed winter cape. The right dates will depend on your trophy priorities, schedule and whether you plan to combine Tahr with other New Zealand species.

Weather is always a major consideration in the Southern Alps. We build enough flexibility into our itineraries to wait for a safe weather window before traveling into the mountains.

How Physical Is a New Zealand Tahr Hunt?

A Tahr hunt takes place in steep alpine terrain, but the level of physical difficulty can vary.

Helicopter access removes much of the time and effort required to reach remote hunting areas. Once on the ground, however, hunters should be prepared to walk across uneven terrain, climb when necessary and maintain a stable shooting position in mountain conditions.

We discuss physical ability, preferred hunting style and shot-distance comfort before the trip. This allows Liam and the Ivory Cliffs team to plan the hunt around the individual hunter rather than forcing every client into the same approach.

Hunters should arrive with broken-in boots, base layers, rain gear and clothing suitable for changing alpine weather.

How Much Does a Tahr Hunt in New Zealand Cost?

Our East Coast Tahr-only packages currently begin at:

  • $9,500 USD for a 1x1 guided hunt
  • $9,000 USD per hunter for a 2x1 guided hunt

The package includes two nights of accommodation, daily hunting rates and the necessary helicopter time for the hunt.

A Red Stag and Bull Tahr combination begins at $16,500 USD per hunter for a 2x1 hunt. The final price depends on the selected Red Stag SCI class, guiding arrangement and whether additional species are included.

Can You Combine Tahr With a Red Stag Hunt?

Absolutely, you betcha! Red Stag and Tahr are two of New Zealand’s most iconic big-game species, and hunting both allows you to experience the country’s two major islands in one trip.

The Red Stag portion begins at Ivory Cliffs Estate in Hawke’s Bay on the North Island. From there, we travel to the South Island when the weather provides the right opportunity to hunt Tahr in the Southern Alps.

Hunters can also add Chamois to create a three-species New Zealand hunt. This combination brings together the antlered trophy of a Red Stag with two very different alpine pursuits.
