Red Stag, Tahr & Chamois Hunting Package - East coast
Take on New Zealand's trophy trifecta with a seven day hunt for Red Stag, Himalayan Tahr & Chamois. Your hunt begins at Ivory Cliffs Estate's main lodge on the North Island, where you settle in and commence the hunt for your Red stag. This seven-day package allows plenty of time to look over the various stags you will see and be certain before you squeeze the trigger. It also allows plenty of time for the perfect weather window to take the scenic trip to the South Island, where you can hunt for the majestic Himalayan Tahr & Chamois in the Southern Alps. This weather window is vital because we use helicopters to access the remote mountaintops while searching for large Bull Tahr and sure-footed Chamois; your safety & comfort are our top priority.
As mentioned in the title, this hunt for Tahr & Chamois takes place on the East Coast of the South Island and is one of two Tahr & Chamois hunting areas we offer. Both options are uniquely different in location and travel arrangements. Our East Coast option starts with a commercial flight from Napier Airport to Christchurch in the South Island on New Zealand's national carrier, Air New Zealand. Upon arrival in Christchurch your guide drives you deep into the mountains, specifically the Rakaia Valley, where the helicopter and your accommodation are nestled beneath the towering Southern Alps and pristine Tahr & Chamois country. Here you are hosted exclusively by the pilot & his wife (Simon & Rachel) and are treated to spectacular views, phenomenal home cooked meals & the best of Kiwi hospitality. Simply walk out the door and into the helicopter where your adventure awaits!
*package includes all helicopter time for the Tahr & Chamois hunt, flight from the North Island to South Island (commercial), 7 nights accommodation, trophy Red Stag & Trophy Bull Tahr, non - hunter can accompany hunter in the helicopter

South Island Adventure
For the hunter seeking to complete the ultimate New Zealand trophy collection, a journey to the South Island is essential. The majestic Himalayan Tahr and the elusive Chamois are exclusively found in the rugged alpine environment of the Southern Alps. To access this remote and breathtaking wilderness, your adventure includes a flight from the North Island to the South Island, followed by a thrilling helicopter flight directly into the hunting grounds. This is an unparalleled hunting experience, combining the pursuit of two iconic mountain species with some of the most spectacular scenic flying in the world.
You may ask why not just hunt on the South Island? By choosing one of our combined Red Stag and South Island packages, you experience not one, but two vastly different and spectacular areas of New Zealand. Your adventure begins on the North Island, hunting the world-class Red Stag in a lush, expansive estate setting. You then journey to the South Island to tackle the rugged alpine terrain for Tahr and Chamois. This deliberate combination ensures that your trip is not just a successful hunt, but a comprehensive New Zealand wilderness and scenery expedition, allowing you to see and experience more of the country in a single, unforgettable adventure.
Our packages are designed to give you the best opportunity to harvest these magnificent animals. We offer options combining a world-class Red Stag with either a Trophy Bull Tahr, or a 'Mountain Slam' package that includes both a Tahr and a Chamois. Outside of the Red Stag, the Bull Tahr is arguably New Zealand’s most coveted trophy, prized for its impressive mane and the challenging nature of the hunt. These combined Stag and South Island hunts are structured as 7-day adventures. This extended duration is crucial, as hunting in the high Southern Alps is extremely weather-dependent; the extra time ensures we have the necessary clear weather windows for safe and successful helicopter access and hunting.
The method of hunting these mountain monarchs is both exhilarating and effective. We hunt on government land where we hold concessions that exceed 100,000 acres, offering unparalleled access to prime hunting territory.
We only partner with the area's best pilots to ensure our clients' safety and comfort. The helicopter is skillfully utilized to locate the animals in their steep, rocky domain. Once a suitable trophy is sighted, you will exit the aircraft with your guide for the final approach and shot, before the team efficiently recovers your trophy from the mountain face. This incredible hunting technique ensures the highest success rate and offers an unforgettable, action-packed experience. Crucially, the entire hunt unfolds against a backdrop of New Zealand's most breathtaking scenery, turning your hunt into a truly magnificent, scenic flight and wilderness expedition.
For the truly unforgettable Tahr and Chamois hunt in the Southern Alps, we offer two distinct lodging & travel experiences, each serving as the perfect basecamp for your high-country adventure. All hunt packages, regardless of the chosen accommodation & travel option, include all necessary helicopter time, ensuring complete price transparency and no hidden costs for access to the hunting grounds.
East Coast (Rakaia Valley)
After your commercial flight with Air New Zealand from Napier to Christchurch, you will be driven by your guide to our remote accommodation nestled in the beautiful Rakaia Valley. This location provides comfortable, cozy lodging strategically positioned for prime access to the East Coast hunting grounds with a breathtaking view up the Rakaia valley. Literally walk out the door, into the helicopter and you are on your way!
West Coast (Fox Glacier Township)
For the more exclusive experience, the West Coast option begins with a private charter flight in a twin-engine Navajo plane, taking you directly from the North Island (Napier) to the Fox Glacier township. Your luxurious accommodation awaits you here, offering stunning views and quick access to the remote West Coast hunting area. The extreme remoteness of this area of New Zealand, coupled with the reduced travel time thanks to the private charter, not only adds flexibility but also offers the potential for slightly higher trophy quality due to the complexity of accessing the area. *Pricing for the 2x1 West coast Tahr & Chamois is greatly reduced due to cost sharing of the charter flight.
