If you are planning a Red Stag hunt in New Zealand, one of the first decisions you will make is when to come.

New Zealand’s Red Stag hunting season at Ivory Cliffs Estate runs from late February through July, but March and April bring something different to the property. This is the Red Stag Roar, New Zealand’s name for the rut.

For many hunters, experiencing the Roar is one of the biggest reasons to hunt Red Stag in New Zealand. Mature stags become more vocal and active, their behavior changes and the sound of roaring stags carries across the hills.

At Ivory Cliffs Estate, those roars echo from the sandstone cliffs surrounding the lodge. It is a sound that is difficult to fully appreciate until you are standing there and hearing it for yourself.

What Does the Red Stag Roar Mean?

The Red Stag Roar is the annual breeding period for Red Deer. It is similar to the elk rut familiar to many American hunters.

During the Roar, mature stags gather groups of hinds and compete with other males for dominance. They roar to announce their presence, warn competing stags and maintain control of their group.

Rival stags may answer each other from different areas of the property before moving closer to investigate or challenge one another.

The Roar does not mean simply walking out and shooting the first stag you hear. Conditions, wind, terrain and the movement of the hinds all influence how the hunt unfolds.

When Is the Red Stag Roar in New Zealand?

The Red Stag Roar at Ivory Cliffs Estate generally runs from mid-March through the end of April.

Because New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are opposite those in North America. March and April fall during New Zealand’s autumn, bringing cooler temperatures and increased rutting activity.

The exact timing and intensity can vary slightly from year to year. Weather, temperature and the behavior of the animals all play a role. Some stags may become active earlier, while others continue roaring later into April.

If experiencing the heart of the Roar is important to you, we recommend discussing dates with us early. March and April are among the most requested times of our hunting season.

What Is It Like to Hunt During the Roar?

Red Stag hunting during the Roar has a sound and energy of its own.

A hunt may begin by listening for stags before daylight and moving to an elevated position to glass as the country becomes visible. A stag heard roaring from a distance may lead the hunt into a completely different area than originally planned.

Once a mature stag is located, your guide will help evaluate the animal and determine how to make the approach. The stag may be moving with hinds, responding to another bull or working through cover. The situation can change quickly, and hunters must remain patient until the right opportunity develops.

Is the Roar the Best Time to Hunt Red Stag in New Zealand?

The Roar is an incredible time to hunt, but the best time is NOW! You’ve been doing enough research, now is the time to come hunt with us.

Hunters who want to hear roaring stags and experience the intensity of the rut will naturally be drawn to March and April. The increased vocal activity can help guides locate mature stags and create situations unique to this part of the season.

Late February through mid-March can provide an opportunity to hunt mature stags before the most intense rutting begins. Hunts later in the season offer a different experience and may work better for hunters combining Red Stag with winter-coated Himalayan Tahr.
